Goal of the Movement:
Maximize opportunities for personal growth and development by temporarily disconnecting from social media, creating more time to gain new experiences in the real world. By logging into life more fully, new skills and experiences can be developed which makes for a more well-rounded person and positions them better for stronger interpersonal communication and relationships.
Purpose / Achievement of the Goal:
To challenge others through a one week Digital Detox in order to gain perspective on determining the right balance for a more purposeful use of social media.

FAQs:

Where do I sign up?

Click on the “sign up” button on the home page, fill out the pre and post movement google forms

After I sign up, how do I participate?
Log off or delete social media apps (snap, insta, twitter, facebook, tiktok, VSCO, etc) from your device for one week. No cheating, that means don't log on from your computer / friend's device !! You've got this!!

After your detox, be sure to fill out the post movement survey! You will receive an email to remind you to complete this.

Can I still use my phone during the Social Media Digital Detox?
Yes, just not your social media networking apps. Texting, Calling, FaceTime, Email, etc are all good.

When is the Social Media Digital Detox?
For individuals: any week / 7 day time frame you want! The movement is officially in the month of April.
For organizations / schools: determine and promote your desired dates.

Why should I participate?
a) Finding balance and moderation with anything in life is important.
b) Similar to a diet, you gain perspective and learn what changes, if any, need to be made going forward.
c) Benefits range from better time management, increased productivity, opportunity for deepening
relationships, improved mood, less anxiety, more free time, etc.

Is social media bad?
No. Social media is great! It’s simply figuring out how a more purposeful balance of social media use fits into your life (read more in the “about” section on the homepage).

What can I expect during the Social Media Digital Detox?
First two days are the toughest, but then it gets easier and you will begin to see benefits.

What about YouTube, Netflix, and Pinterest?
a) YouTube: This is your call- it depends on how you use it. Be honest with yourself, if you spend hours on YouTube mindlessly scrolling through videos, then take a detox. But if you use YouTube as an occasional informational resource, then it's okay.
b) Netflix: No, Netflix is not social media, be cautious to not increase use during your detox.
c) Pinterest: You decide, if its an informational resource, then it doesn't count. If you are mindlessly scrolling, then detox!

What do I do when I can't turn to social media during downtime?
At first it can be awkward when you don't have your phone as a crutch. But that's totally normal.  Don't worry.  Maybe think of a few questions ahead of time so that you have them handy when in groups.  How was your last class? What did you do this weekend? etc.  It's also interesting and fun to observe your surroundings, play math games, or just sit and see where your thoughts take you.

What do you do with my answers from the pre and post survey?
Information gathered is for the purpose of research. We will use aggregate data to identify trends and report how teens experienced the detox. We might use a quote, but would keep it anonymous.

Who should I contact for more questions or if I am having technical difficulties?
Please email me at teendigitaldetox@gmail.com and I will get back to you in 24 hours or less.
